HIST 339 The Making of Modern America, 1877-1920 (also American Studies)

A seminar on the cultural history of the United States from the end of Reconstruction to the end of World War I, with emphasis on the problems of analyzing changes in politics, religion, labor and industrial production, retailing, amusement, and consumption. Underlying the class is special attention to transformations of gender relations and identities at the turn of the century.
