Beginning with the class of 2012, history majors will follow a new set of guidelines. The new plan differs by:
- eliminating the formal concentration requirement,
- requiring at least one course before 1700 and at least one course after 1700,
- requiring at least one course outside the history of Europe and the United States,
- revising the Junior Tutorial slightly, principally by allowing instructors more discretion in the works selected and the exercises employed for the course,
- adding a research paper requirement, to be fulfilled in new Senior Research Seminars,
- re-aligning the Honors Program so that it follows and extends the work done in the Senior Research Seminar,
- requiring a Comprehensive Exam that is not based on national or geographic boundaries.
Potential majors should discuss their interests in history with a faculty member in the department. Rather than identifying themselves by concentrations, students are encouraged to consider the historical themes, issues, movements, and questions they are most interested in exploring as part of their history major.
